Types of Tickets
Buying a bus ticket is easy. Just go to one of our conveniently located ticket agents or buy a cash fare from the driver when you get on board.
Fares are charged on the distance you wish to travel. Stage points are used in Auckland to calculate the distance to be charged (stage points are often called sections, stages or sometimes zones in other cities). Stage points are set at specific points along a route, approximately every four kilometres, often at a point of interest such as a local shopping centre.
The fare increases for each stage point your journey takes you through. For instance if you were to make a journey from Auckland’s CBD to Manukau City Centre you pass through stage points at Newmarket, the Harp of Erin, Otahuhu and Hunters Corner. Therefore the total number of stages travelled is five.
Each timetable route map clearly shows where the stage points for that route are located.
Cash Fares
All GO WEST, North Star, LINK, Metrolink and Waka Pacific buses accept cash for payment of fares. Exact change is appreciated, but change can usually be given for small notes.
10 ride (Multi-Journey) Fares
A 10 ride ticket offers you multiple trips at a discount for a set number of stages. If you make the same trip often, it will be cheaper for you to buy a 10 ride ticket rather than single trip cash fares. 10 ride tickets are loaded onto a Go Rider smart card. Multiples of 10 rides up to a maximum of 40 can be loaded onto a Go Rider smart card, all rides loaded must be of the same stage distance. For more information on Go Rider cards click here
Zone Passes
Zone Passes are loaded onto a Go Rider smart card and offer unlimited travel on bus services within a specific zone over a specified period. Weekly and Monthly zone passes are available. A zone pass starts from the day you first use it on the bus and is valid for either 7 consecutive days (weekly pass) or one month (monthly pass). If you travel regularly by bus, weekly and monthly passes are a convenient and cost effective way to pay for your bus fare.
Monthly passes can either be purchased for Zone A or Zone B or All Zones and Weekly passes can be purchased for All Zones.

Stored Value
Stored value allows you to load a Go Rider smart card with an amount of money from a minimum of $10 to a maximum of $100 (in multiples of $10). The cost of your bus fare is deducted from the value on your Go Rider card each time you make a trip. This saves you the hassle of carrying cash and you receive a 10% discount off the single ride cash fare.
Day Passes
Day Passes offer convenience and value to the occasional traveller for one day within specific zones and times. Day Passes can be purchased from the driver with cash or you can use stored value on a Go Rider card to purchase a day pass. Day Passes are personal to the holder and may not be transferred to another person.
Go Rider Smart Cards
Go Rider smart cards cost $10 and can be purchased from ticket agents. They can be loaded at both ticket agents or by the driver on the bus. (NB: Tertiary 10 ride tickets can only be loaded at ticket agents). For more information on Go Rider smart cards click here.
