Waka Pacific
The name Waka Pacific, or “vessel of the Pacific”, reflects the multi-cultural nature of the community Waka Pacific serves – Counties Manukau.
The Designs
Design number one

This design is based on a mural found in the Otara town centre. The mural was commissioned by Manukau City Council in 2000. Terry Klavenes, who was involved in creating the mural, brought together a number of local artists to help design it. One of these artists was Henry Wilson who was well-known in the community for his art, music and work with young people. Sadly, Henry died before the mural was started so it became a tribute to him. Waka Pacific is proud to honour Henry Wilson through using this much-loved artwork on its buses.
Design number two

The second bus design was influenced by the many and varied lava lavas worn throughout the community. The gradation of vibrant colour and the strong floral theme connects with the flamboyant cultures that make up Manukau city and its surrounds, particularly reflecting its south Pacific heritage.
Design number three

For the third design we approached the Papakura District Council for their input. We worked closely with the council’s arts advisor and its kaitiaki forum, which is made up of representatives of Papakura’s five iwi. It reflects the Maori population of the area. The colours and shapes represent the water, air and land. There are also references to the area’s three pa sites.
